What is a Gap Year?
fter being involved in, taking part in or working in the Gap Year
Travel industry all my life, I decided to help people who want to take a Gap Year by setting up my new website: I Wish Gap Year. I visit schools & colleges, giving advice to parents and students
on all aspects of a ‘Gap Year’, and I often get asked, ”What is a Gap Year”? History
The first instance of volunteers being sent to a destination on an
organised program was back in 1967 by Nicholas Maclean-Bristol, who set up Project Trust(in the UK) and in turn created the Gap Year Volunteering Market. There are two really key points here; one being that this consisted of
volunteering and the other that it involved an element of ‘independent travel’ – not a tour or organised group trip from a brochure. Later, working holiday visas were introduced and became popular, thus adding “Working Abroad” to the Gap Year market. Want to read more from this article? Visit the full post on our website.

Amsterdam Airport Guide
Look around
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and you may be deceived by the hordes of red-eyed folks ambling around in a daze into thinking this airport is as dull as ditchwater. Of course, anyone familiar with Amsterdam will know that the glazed looks will owe more to the city’s famous coffee shops than the lack of things to do in the airport.
In fact, Schiphol is one of Europe’s best and most modern transport hubs, and anyone finding themselves with a long layover should be reassured that they will never be short of something to keep them busy until their flight.
As well as a fine selection of eating and drinking venues, Amsterdam airport also boasts a fine choice of activities and attractions, including a casino, an art collection and play areas for children (a god-send for parents).
Perhaps the airport’s most unique feature is the miniature version of the world famous Rijksmuseum (located in the city centre) which can be found in the departure lounge. The museum displays a permanent exhibition of ten works by the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt and some of his esteemed contemporaries. Free to peruse, the exhibition is an excellent way to avoid throwing money at unnecessary purchases – a habit that any regular airport passenger will understand.
Strange as it may seem, a visit to the little boy’s or girl’s room is also recommended. If you’re spending 12 hours in Amsterdam airport, you’ll be ’spending a penny’ at some point, so will hopefully get to witness the blocks of toilets that have been decorated in typical Dutch themes, including canal houses, tulip fields, famous paintings and local landscapes. A sight to behold!

5 Tips for Being Sun Safe this Summer
ince I started traveling in 2002, I have only encountered one sunburn. 1) First Things First. Before I leave my house or
hotel, I apply sunscreen to my entire body (or the areas that will be exposed) and then, after it dries, get dressed as usual. This method allows for the sunscreen to absorb into your skin and allows for more even coverage since you’re not dealing with trying to avoid clothing. I use Coppertone Nutrashield with SPF 70 and love the non-greasy, pleasant smelling sun protection. I always throw the bottle in my daypack for touch-ups which I try to do every few hours if I am outside and even more frequently if I am in the water. 2) Benefits of Beauty. On most days, I use Benefit You Rebel as my foundation along with many
of their other products, most of which are infused with SPF. But for travel days, I like to keep my make-up basic. I start with an oil-free moisturizer with SPF 15 (I love Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 15) and keep it simple with waterproof mascara and Softlips lip balm SPF 20. For non-greasy touch-ups, I am officially obsessed with Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30. It’s easy to bring with and reasonably priced. Want to read the other three tips? Check out the full article here.
