Another week, another Wednesday. While Americans are enjoying the short work week, I’m suffering through my first full week of school in weeks (there are four bank holidays in May in France!). Even though the sun is out and I’m content to while away on the beach, summer travel season is almost in full swing…which means I can’t stop thinking about what I want my next destination to be!
Not just another beach read: Yes, my obsession with Eat Pray Love borders on the Twihard level. However, I was definitely able to relate with complaints on Almost Fearless about the lack of in-depth travel writing. In Beyond the First Year of Travel, she vents her frustration about the travel memoirs that barely scratch the surface, that cover a year in paradise but don’t address the questions that long-term travelers face.
The glory of Ghana: Africa has never been at the top of my must-see destination list, but following the adventures of Amateurs Africa is certainly changing my mind. This pair of fun-loving Australians is backpacking their way to the World Cup. A bit crazy, but they can offer some great advice to the African enthusiast who wants to go beyond staged safaris. Don’t miss their guide to Ghana if you’re thinking about booking a trip.
Because football isn’t the only sport in the world: I once dated a rugby player, and believe me, the rugby community is a crazy but cool bunch of guys. Heels and Wheels covers the State of Origin, where players ditch their club teams and play for their home region. What I would give to watch see this sporting event live–hometown pride at its finest!
Confidence is key: I’ve always believed that a positive attitude can work wonders, especially when we’re in unfamiliar situations–like traveling! Andy Hayes of Sharing Travel Experiences shares his tips on how to travel with confidence. My personal favorite? If you forget it, you can almost always buy it there–so stop worrying!
The train experience: While it took me a while to make up my mind, I’ve finally decided on taking the train (instead of a cheap flight) to Paris for a quick getaway in late June. I love train travel because it’s about a thousand times easier than air travel: no security to get through, no checked baggage, no uncomfortable seats. While European train travel is undoubtably better than in America, Kaleidoscopic Wandering explains why she chose Amtrak and gives some tips for enjoying the American countryside by train.

I totally agree with the confidence aspect–especially as it relates to Africa travel! On my own in Uganda I had to rely on the kindness of strangers a LOT and it took a lot of guts (I never knew I had) to leave my friends behind and continue alone to see the whole of the country. The old adage, fake it till you make it definitely applies anywhere in the world! NB if you find yourself traveling in Uganda, I wrote up a list of tips for 1st timers! http://bit.ly/ac0oJR Happy travels!
Thanks so much for the mention! It's an awesome event. I can't wait for the next match this month.
Thanks for the shout out! I'd rather take the train than the plane any day (as long as time allows it).
