Wednesday Wanderlust: June 9, 2010

by DIWYY on June 9, 2010

Well, today’s my birthday. One of my more ambitious goals: spend every birthday in my 20′s in a different country. After celebrating my 21st in Las Vegas, I’m toasting my 22nd on the French Riviera. Without further ado, I give you my favorite travel finds of the week–it’s time for me to get a drink! Happy Wednesday!

The ultimate traveler’s bucket list: I love creating bucket lists–I actually have a “collaborative dreaming” Google doc set up with my best friends to share our pre-marriage and whole-life bucket lists, as well as all our top countries we want to visit. I think writing down and sharing goals helps keep you on track–and reading other people’s list constantly inspires me to add more things to mine! That’s why I’m obsessed with the 29 Travel Experiences to Place on your Bucket List by yTravel Blog. I want to do every single thing on this list–what about you?

The real cost of Spain: I’ve been following Travels of Adam’s adventures in Spain closely since I’m heading to Espagne for the first time in August! He spent a month in the country, and sums up his experiences in Four Weeks in Spain: Superlatives & The Cost. Not surprisingly, tapas and siestas topped his list of favorite things in Spain. If you’re thinking about planning a trip there, check out what his favorite cities are (hint: they’re not the ones that most tourists check out.)

Every country in the world: I’ve never had a burning desire to see every single (official) country in the world, all 192 of them. That’s just not my travel style. However, I loved reading about the challenge at The Art of Non-Conformity to see all of them before his 35th birthday. He’s still got Australia (that’s enough to keep you busy!) on his list, as well as the tricky ones, like Cuba and Iran. I’m sending him the best of luck!

Design for the Other 90 Percent: I graduated from one of the nation’s top “green” universities, and sustainability and environmental awareness are very near and dear to my heart. This piece on how bicycle power in Guatemala is being used to thresh corn, de-shell coffee beans and blend smoothies is an awesome example of how environmentally-friendly technology can be used in poorer countries. If you’re in Washington D.C., check out other innovative ideas like this at Design for the Other 90%, a free exhibit at National Geographic headquarters.

East or West?: Even though a traditional RTW trip is not on the horizon for me, I thought this piece on choosing to head East or West on Two Go Round-the-World brought up some interesting points. They factor in things like starting point, amount of money, routing and speed of travel–all questions that I never would have thought to ask! If you’re thinking about heading RTW, definitely check out this piece before booking your ticket.
